World Health Organization Sounds Concern Over Critical Scarcity of Obesity Medications

Less than 10% of patients that would benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy are able to get them, caution the World Health Organization as it issues its initial advice on the medications.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide now obese, it is urging increased and just availability to this class of drugs.

Per estimates, over two billion could be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"The new guidelines affirms that obesity is a chronic disease that can be treated with comprehensive and lifelong treatment," stated WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, limited production capacity, and supply-chain constraints are major obstacles to universal availability to the injections that can assist patients in reducing substantial weight, notes the body.

Skinny Jab Shortage

Despite the current most favorable case, the manufacturing of these medications would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, according to the WHO.

The advice encourages governments and firms to increase availability, by measures like licensing agreements.

A patent on a key compound – the core ingredient of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is due to expire in several nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Injections Work

The injections imitate a biological compound to reduce digestion speed, suppress the appetite and enhance the sense of being full so people eat less.

Individuals typically begin shedding pounds within a few weeks of commencing the once-weekly jabs.

Studies suggests patients may see weight return after a year of stopping the drug, because their usual food cravings come back.

Being overweight or obese increases your likelihood for developing diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some malignancies.

Excess weight concerns individuals in all nations and was responsible for millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
