Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
