European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Additional Updates in the News

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “another example” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
