Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.
This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's decision was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that the former president be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
He was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on the eighth of January, many his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.
The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and return him to office.
At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the 2026 presidential election.
